High creatinine and medications: What you need to know

After a blood test, you may want to know about the results. What if there are any changes in the blood creatinine range? Am I having any sort of kidney disease? Such questions always rule the mind.

But, we are here to debunk your myth of associating creatinine with impaired kidney function. It is true, though, not always, however.

If your serum creatinine levels are higher than normal, it is not a good thing, but there could be some medications that cause real problems for kidneys. Some medications raise blood creatinine levels and may make you think you have kidney disease when that is not the case. We have helped cut down four drugs that can result in a high creatinine range through this blog, and you should avoid them. Overconsumption of these medications can put your kidneys at risk, and you may need Ayurvedic medicine for creatinine substantially.

But before that, let us understand more about creatinine.

Creatinine is a chemical waste compound in the blood, usually which is expelled out by the kidneys during the blood filtration process. In some cases, when your kidneys are not working right, it is the serum creatinine range and glomerular filtration rate, which are high. However, serum creatinine can also rise for some other reasons, such as strenuous exercise or dehydration or eating a lot of meat, or perhaps some medications.

Let us understand the high creatinine range with the help of the fact men and women tend to have a different creatinine range. Men have more muscle mass, and so ideally, they can have creatinine in the range of 0.6 and 1.2. However, women, on the other hand, have a low mass can have a range between 0.5 and 1.1.

Some signs your kidney function is impaired, and so do the blood creatinine range:

• Nausea
• Chest Pain
• Muscle Cramps
• Vomiting
• Fatigue
• Changes in urination frequency and appearance
• High blood pressure
• Swelling or fluid retention
• Itchiness
• Neuropathy
• Mineral and bone disorder
• Anemia

4 Medications that can raise blood creatinine range, at least temporary:

1) Sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim (Bactrim / Septra)
This antibiotic is prescribed to individuals with urinary tract infections and other skin infections triggered by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and upper respiratory infections. These medications allowed the body to retain more creatinine during the blood filtration process, so your serum creatinine may rise after consuming them even though your kidney function is accurate and perfectly fine.

2) Acid blockers — cimetidine (Tagamet) & ranitidine (Zantac)
Acid blockers or H2-blockers such as cimetidine (Tagamet) and ranitidine (Zantac) used for reflux and heartburn symptoms can cause a sudden spike in the blood creatinine range. H2 blockers result in poor creatinine clearance, and so your body may hold more creatinine in the blood. It is also not indicative of poor kidney function.

3) Cephalosporin antibiotics
These sorts of antibiotics are used to treat skin infections, ear infections, respiratory infections, and urinary tract infections. Like the above-mentioned medications, they also result in a high creatinine range and cause a false alarm that your kidney function is not accurate. But this is temporary and actually not a parameter to judge how your kidneys are functioning. This is why most doctors like to do a continuous of three tests to know how your kidneys are working. Examples of oral cephalosporins include cephalexin (Keflex), cefuroxime (Ceftin), and cefaclor (Ceclor), while cefazolin (Ancef) is given intravenously (by IV) only.

4) Fenofibrate (Tricor)
If your cholesterol levels are high, your doctor may suggest medications to lower triglycerides levels in the blood. The medications do help to decrease the risk of heart disease. Taking it causes the body to release more creatinine and so give a false statement.

So, it is necessary that you do not overconsume these medications and take charge of your health. Over time, these medications will actually result in impaired kidney function.
