Overview to kidney

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, whose size is almost like a fist. Present just below the rib cage, one on each side of our spine.

About half a cup of blood is filtered by a healthy kidney every minute, removing all the waste and unnecessary fluid in the form of urine. The urine basically flows from the kidneys to the bladder through two tubes of muscle which are termed as ureters, one on each side of the bladder. Urine is stored in the bladder. Our kidneys, ureters, and bladder are part of the urinary tract.

Importance of kidney?

Kidneys remove wastes from your body. The kidneys also remove acid which is produced by the cells of your body and maintain a healthy balance of salts, water, and minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, in your blood.

In the absence of this balance, nerves, and other tissues in your body will not work normally.

Your kidneys also form hormones that help to:

● Helps to Controls blood pressure
● Formation of red blood cells
● keep the bones strong and healthy

How does the kidney work?

Our kidney is made up of about a million filtering units which are called nephrons. Each nephron includes a filter in them, called a glomerulus, and a tubule. The nephrons basically work through a process in which the glomerulus function is to filters the blood, and the tubule returns needed and useful substances to the blood and removes wastes.

How does blood flow through the kidneys?

Blood basically flows into the kidneys through the renal arteries. These large blood vessels branch into smaller blood vessels until the blood reaches the nephrons. In the nephron, the blood is filtered by the small blood vessels of the glomeruli and then flows out of the kidney through the renal vein.

Blood circulates through the kidneys many times in a day. In a single day, the kidneys filter about 141 liters of blood. Water and other substances that filter through the glomeruli are returned to the blood by the tubules and only 1 to 2 liter become urine.
