IGA Nephropathy: What Is It All About?

Kidneys produce lifesaving hormones and maintain the water levels inside our bodies. Also, Kidneys are responsible for detoxifying the blood from all kinds of impurities and toxins that might otherwise harm the kidneys. The task of detoxification of blood is done by tiny filters inside the blood vessels. Kidneys have various blood vessels within them that do their task.

Like other proteins, our body produces IgA protein that helps the body fight all kinds of bacterial and viral infections. The inefficiency or abundance of IgA protein might result in various medical complications. In the case of IgA Nephropathy, excessive amounts of IgA proteins get accumulated inside the blood vessels. They end up creating blockages in the blood vessels that damage the filters. Hence, it affects the kidneys and their functions, resulting in severe problems like Kidney Failure.

What Leads to IgA Nephropathy?

Despite increasing technological advancement all over the planet, there are various diseases whose exact cause is still unknown. Similarly, in IgA Nephropathy disease, scientists and doctors have no answers that could explain the exact cause of this disease. There have been many cases where the body's immune cells attacked the healthy cells resulting in this disease. Hence, medical experts consider IgA Nephropathy as an immune and kidney disease.

What Does IgA Nephropathy Lead To?

Patients who are in the early stages of IgA nephropathy might not notice any significant symptoms. Since this disease affects the patients gradually, the symptoms are only visible once the disease becomes severe or an organ gets affected. A patient might have had this disease for many years without any symptoms. However, once the problem starts affecting the routine functioning of the kidneys, you might notice:
  • Discolouration of Urine (pink or brown colour because of blood in Urine)
  • Foamy Urine because of leakage of protein
  • Swelling in hands, legs and other parts of the body
  • Inflammation in different organs of the body
  • Kidney Failure
  • End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or CKD Stage 5

Diagnosis of IgA Nephropathy

If you face any symptoms, the doctor or any medical expert will ask you to get some tests done. You will be advised of either of the three or all of them if the results are insufficient. These are:

Blood Tests: A Blood Test would give the details of any blockages or accumulation of IgA Protein inside the blood vessels.

Urine Test: A Urine Test would give the details of red blood cells or protein inside the Urine.

Kidney Biopsy: If the blood and urine tests do not give any results of this disease, you might be asked to go through a Kidney Biopsy. In this case, some of the tissues from the kidneys are taken for examination. It tells where there is any damage in the kidneys or blood vessels.
