Polycystic kidney disease, as the name suggests it is associated with the growth of cysts in your kidney. Also known as PKD, it is a genetic disorder that causes the formation and growth of cysts (lump of fluid) that lead to a change in the shape of the kidneys and affects other organs as well. These cysts create hindrance in the filtration of the waste products from the blood. Apart from knowing what PKD is, what else is important? Yes! Knowing about the causes, symptoms, and treatment is also important. Let's dive in and reach the roots of the PKD to withstand this disease.
Causes of polycystic kidney disease-
Usually, PKD is caused due to genetic flaws. Despite gender, age, and sex, polycystic kidney disease can occur in anybody. These flaws in genes lead to two different types of polycystic kidney disease-
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease - Earlier, this was known as Adult polycystic kidney disease, but later, it was found that children were also being affected by it. It just needs one parent to carry the flawed genes, and the chances for children and other members to develop this disease increases by a high percentage. Its symptoms can be seen developing at or between the age of 30 and 40.
Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease- In this type of polycystic kidney disease, both the parents are responsible for the passage of flawed genes to their children. ARPKD prevent the normal evolution and growth of kidneys and result in the enlargement and fibrosis of kidneys and eventually prevent the proper functioning of the kidney. The symptoms of ARPKD can be seen from birth, and in some cases, it can be seen during adolescence.
If you are wondering how it feels when you develop PKD or what do the symptoms look like, given below is the list of Symptoms of PKD-
• Kidney infections
• Headache
• Abdomen fullness
• Kidney stones
• High blood pressure
• Enlarged kidneys
• Pain in joints
• Abnormal nails
• Bruised skin
• Frequent urination
PKD doesn't only affect the kidneys, but some other organs also get affected during the evolution of this disease. People suffering from PKD have chances of developing cysts in their other organs like ovaries, liver, pancreas, large bowel, and spleen.
No problem in the world comes without a solution to it. Similarly, polycystic kidney disease also has certain solutions to it. Treating polycystic kidney disease through Ayurveda is a great choice because Ayurveda has a lot to offer and less to harm. Unlike allopathy, Ayurveda works on the roots of the disease and not only on the symptoms. According to Ayurveda, two of the essential methods that can be used as the ayurvedic polycystic kidney disease treatment are as follows-
1. Uva Ursi- This is a medicinal herb, scientifically known as Arctostaphylos uva ursi and bearberry in common. In the past, uva ursi was commonly used for the treatment of bladder related problems. Research has found that uva ursi contains many chemicals like arbutin and hydroquinone that provide them with the ability to fight infections. It has tannins in it that help the mucous membrane in the body to shrink and reduces inflammation. When it comes to the use of uva ursi, only leaves are used as the herb and not the fruit part(berry). You can find uva ursi in the crushed powdered form commercially. It can be toxic if taken without any prescription and don't forget to keep it away from the reach of the children. If you are on any medication, then avoid the use of uva ursi as it can react with the herbs and medication present in your body already.
2. Striped maple- consumption of striped maple's tree bark can be an excellent treatment for people suffering from PKD. One can use it in the form of tea; all you have to do is prepare a tea from its bark and take it according to the prescription.
3. Bunchberry- It is a medicinal herb that helps the patient to fight with chronic kidney disease. The whole plant can be used for the treatment.
4. Squash- Seeds of squash are taken as the ayurvedic medicine to treat PKD.
5. Tamarack- is a medicinal tree whose gum has done a miracle to kidney patients.
6. Labrador tea- It is a shrub, scientifically known as Ledum groenlandicum. The leaf of labrador tea is the most significant part of polycystic kidney disease treatment.
7. Cucumber root- It is also a herb effective in the treatment of PKD. It is used in the dried berry form. Also, the leaf and roots of this herb are used in the treatment.
8. White pine- White pine, a medicinal tree whose bark, needle, and twig are useful in the treatment.
9. The purple pitcher plant- is a herb, and its roots are influential in chronic kidney disease.
